You're standing at San Pietro in Montorio, a church on Rome's Janiculum hill, above the Trastevere district. It's dedicated to the apostle Peter, and tradition says he was crucified on this hill. There was already a church here in the ninth century, with a monastery beside it. By the fifteenth century the buildings were in ruins. They were handed to a reform branch of the Franciscans, who rebuilt church and monastery. Much of the money came from Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain. In 1500, Pope Alexander VI consecrated the church.
