You're standing at the Galleria Borghese, right in the middle of the Villa Borghese park in Rome. The building in front of you wasn't built as a museum. It was a country villa. Cardinal Scipione Borghese, nephew of Pope Paul the Fifth, had it built in the early seventeenth century to show off his art collection. Back then, this land lay outside the city walls. Take a look at the portico: it includes pieces of stone from an old Roman triumphal arch, the Arch of Claudius.
