Privacy bij Outdoor Pitstop
Grond: toestemming.
Locatie.
- om pitstops en bezienswaardigheden in de buurt te tonen. Je locatie gaat dan naar onze database om de dichtstbijzijnde plekken op te zoeken. We bewaren hem daarvoor niet;
- om te controleren of je ter plekke bent. Een foto, review, check-in, bevestiging of voorstel kan alleen binnen 50 meter (bij een bezienswaardigheid 100 meter). Dan sturen we je locatie op dat moment mee, en bewaren we dat je bij die plek was en wanneer;
- om te navigeren. De punten van je route gaan naar Mapbox, die de route berekent. Tijdens het navigeren volgt de app je locatie, zolang het navigatiescherm open is;
- Google (Google Workspace): onze mailbox.
7. Hoe lang we gegevens bewaren
- Back-ups: onze database maakt dagelijks een back-up.
9. Je rechten
Je hebt het recht om:
- je gegevens in te zien;
- onjuiste gegevens te laten verbeteren (veel kun je zelf, in Profiel bewerken);
- je gegevens te laten wissen (zie hierboven);
- bezwaar te maken tegen gebruik op grond van gerechtvaardigd belang;
- het gebruik te laten beperken;
- je gegevens te krijgen in een gangbaar bestand, om mee te nemen (overdraagbaarheid);
- Meldingen: pushmeldingen, zie hierboven.
Grond: toestemming (cookies); gerechtvaardigd belang (anonieme tellingen).
15. Contact
Vragen over je privacy, of een verzoek? Gebruik het contactformulier.
Privacy policy
1. Who we are
Outdoor Pitstop is an app (iPhone and Android) and a website (outdoorpitstop.com) that helps you find outdoor facilities: benches, water points, public toilets, bike pumps and honesty boxes. It also has landmarks with an audio story.
The controller of your data is Robin Slootman, in the Netherlands. For privacy questions, use the contact form.
2. In short
- We only keep what we need to make the app work.
- We only use your location while you have the app open, or when you navigate a walking route yourself: then also with the screen off, until you stop.
- We don’t sell your data, show ads or track you across other apps or websites.
- Your data is stored in a data centre in Frankfurt (EU).
- You can delete your account and your data yourself, in the app.
3. What data we use, and why
For each type of data we explain what we use it for and our legal basis under the GDPR. “Contract” means: needed to provide the app you use. “Legitimate interest” means: we have a good reason that outweighs the impact on your privacy, and you can object. “Consent” means: only if you choose so, and you can withdraw it at any time.
Account. You sign in with Apple or Google. We receive a fixed account identifier and your email address. With Apple you can hide your email address; we then receive a forwarding address from Apple. The first time you sign in, Apple also shares your name, which we keep with your account. We never receive or store a password. Basis: contract.
Profile. Your first name, username, home town and, if you like, a profile photo. If you enter the username of the person who invited you during sign-up, we store that too, so they get their points. Basis: contract.
Gender and date of birth. Optional. Only you can see them. We use your gender to pick the character on your own screens. You can clear both at any time in Edit profile. Basis: consent.
Location. The app uses your phone’s location, only if you allow it and only while you use the app:
- to show nearby pitstops and landmarks. Your location is sent to our database to look up the nearest places. We don’t store it for this;
- to check that you are on the spot. A photo, review, check-in, confirmation or suggestion is only possible within 50 metres (100 metres for a landmark). We then send your location at that moment, and store that you were at that place and when;
- to navigate. The points of your route are sent to Mapbox, which calculates the route. While navigating, the app follows your location as long as the navigation screen is open;
- to count which stretch of a walking route you walk. Only when you navigate a walking route while signed in, the app also follows you with the screen off, until you stop or reach the end. You can tell by the blue location icon (iPhone) or a fixed notification (Android). About every kilometre your location is sent to our database. Of that we only store which stretch of the route you walked and when, not your track. We also store your walking time, where along the route you took a break of at least 5 minutes (as a distance from the start, with the pitstop there) and for how long, and, if you give the app access to Motion & Fitness, your number of steps. You see your own walk; others only see averages of at least 3 walkers, never your walk.
- to record a route of your own. Only when you press Record yourself does the app follow you, also with the screen off, until you press Done (with the blue icon or the fixed notification). Until you save, that track stays on your phone; if you save the route, we store the track as the line of your route. So here we do store your track, because you choose to.
Basis: contract (the app works based on your location) and legitimate interest (a reliable map, without fake contributions from the sofa).
Photos. Photos you add to a pitstop or landmark are visible to everyone, with your username. Your phone first makes a smaller copy without the hidden data in the photo (EXIF). We store the place and time the photo was taken separately and privately. Nobody else can see them; we only use them to spot suspicious photos. Photos you take in the app are also saved to your own camera roll. You can turn this off in Settings. Basis: contract and legitimate interest (preventing abuse).
Your contributions. New pitstops, reviews with scores, type and features, votes (thumbs), confirmations that a place still exists, suggestions for a better name or location, and the history of those changes. Basis: contract.
What you save and do. Your lists with notes and order, members of shared lists, your check-ins and visits, your XP, level, streak, patches and trophies, and your settings (such as start screen, Home layout, notifications and whether you appear on the leaderboard). Basis: contract.
Teams. If you are in a team, we store which team, your role (captain, admin or member) and when you joined and left. The XP you earn while you are in the team counts for the team and stays with the team when you leave. We keep track of the team’s activity, such as new photos, reviews and pitstops by members, and who gave a high five. Your team only sees your check-ins and Freshness Checks if you turn on “Share my visits with my team” in your team’s activity; it is off by default. When it is on, your teammates see in the activity and on the team map which pitstops and landmarks you visited. If you turn it off again, they no longer see your earlier visits either. For the captain and admins we keep track of who joined, left or was removed from the team. If a captain or admin removes and blocks you, we store that so you cannot join again. Basis: contract.
Team chat. Messages you send in the team chat are stored with the team. Members see them with your username and profile photo; people who join later only see messages from after they joined. A word filter stops messages with offensive words before they are sent. Anyone can report a message or block a member. A message reported by two members is hidden for everyone. The captain and admins can remove messages and remove or block members. Basis: contract and legitimate interest (a safe chat).
AI check of reported chat messages. Only when someone reports a chat message do we send the text of that message to Anthropic (Claude), without your name or any other data. Claude judges whether the message breaks the chat rules: no hate or discrimination, no threats, no bullying, no sexual content, no personal data of other people and no spam. If the message clearly breaks a rule, it is hidden right away. Otherwise nothing changes. Our admins then review every report themselves and decide whether the message comes back or stays removed. This concerns the message, not you. Basis: legitimate interest (a safe chat).
Inbox. In the app and on the website you have an inbox with messages from Outdoor Pitstop to you: news, messages about Pro, trophies, invitations and most of the push notifications we sent you. We also store whether you have read them. Basis: contract.
Signing in on the website. You can also sign in on outdoorpitstop.com, with Apple or Google, using the same account as in the app. Your sign-in is kept in your own browser (local storage), so you stay signed in. This storage is needed to sign in; no data goes to anyone else. Basis: contract.
Your profile on the website. When signed in, you see and change the same things on the website as in the app, such as your first name, home town, profile photo, lists, visits, leaderboard, team, inbox and notification settings. A profile photo you choose on the website is cropped to a square in your browser and stored just like in the app. Basis: contract.
Send to phone. If you choose “Send to phone” on the website, we send the pitstop as a notification to the phones where you are signed in with the same account and have notifications on. We store which pitstop you sent and when, so we can limit how many (at most 10 an hour). The QR code for “Send to phone” is made in your browser; nothing is sent to us for it. Basis: contract.
Videos at routes. If you add a YouTube or TikTok video to a walking route, we store the link, the title, the name of the creator, the length, the language, a copy of the preview image, and that you added it and when. To check that the video is about the route, our server asks YouTube or TikTok for the details of that video (such as title and description); nothing about you is sent along. Others see the video, but not who added it. Your thumbs on videos and your reports are stored as with photos. Basis: contract.
Routes of your own. If you make a route (draw it, turn a list into a route, record it or load a GPX file), we store the line, the name, your answers to the questions about the route, and that you made it. From a GPX file we only take the line and the name. To work out the climbing, our server asks PDOK for the height of the ground along the line; nothing about you is sent along. A route of your own is private until you share it with a link (whoever opens the link can see it) or make it public. Before it can be public we check that you walked it yourself and took a photo on the way: for that we use the place and time in that photo, which we keep private. For a public route we leave out the first and last 200 metres by default, so nobody can see where you started. Basis: contract.
Views. We count per day how often your pitstops, photos and reviews are viewed, and show you this under “Your impact”. We do not record who viewed them. Basis: legitimate interest.
App statistics. To improve the app we keep a log of which screens and features you use: when you open the app, which pitstop or landmark you view, whether you search, choose a filter, share something, plan a route, start and finish a navigation or story, open a notification or change a setting. With iOS or Android and the app version. Not your location, not what you type or search for, not which list or person it was and not what you choose in a setting. If you are signed in, it is linked to your account; without an account we only count that the app was opened, without knowing by whom. We only use this ourselves, for totals. Basis: legitimate interest.
Statistics with Google Firebase. The app also uses Firebase Analytics from Google, to see how the app is used: how often and how long it is open, which version and what kind of phone, the country and city (derived from your IP address, which Google does not keep), and which screens and features you use (as above, and also saving, checking in, photos, reviews and adding a pitstop), but without which pitstop, landmark, story, list or person it was and without what you type. For this, Firebase keeps a random code on your phone. It is not linked to your account, we use no advertising ID, and Google does not use the data for ads. This is on by default. You turn it off in the app under Settings › Share statistics with Google; after that the app sends nothing to Firebase. Basis: legitimate interest.
Push notifications. If you allow notifications, we store a code for notifications on your phone (push token), the type of phone, the language and the time zone. This way we send notifications in your language and not at night. Examples: a reminder to write a review after a visit, changes in a shared list, a new message in your team chat, a new level or a weekly overview. For the team chat and shared lists, the notification shows the username of whoever sent or changed something; for the team chat also the start of the message (at most 100 characters). For the team chat and shared lists you choose in Settings whether you get a notification right away (Direct), a bundled notification at most every quarter of an hour, hour, 4 hours or day, or none. You choose which notifications you get in Settings, and you can turn them off completely in your phone’s settings. That is also where you choose whether the text of a notification shows on your lock screen. When you sign out, we unregister your phone. Basis: consent.
Feedback. If you send feedback through the app, we store your message. If you tick the box, we also include the version of the app and of your phone. Basis: legitimate interest (improving the app and fixing bugs).
Reports and blocking. If you report a photo, review, video, chat message or team name, we store your report and the reason. If you block someone, we store that so you no longer see their contributions. Basis: legitimate interest (a safe app) and legal obligation (handling reports of illegal content).
On your phone. Some things stay on your phone only: your sign-in session (encrypted), your choice of kilometres or miles, the playback speed of stories and whether photos go to your camera roll. We never receive them.
Contact form on the website. Your name, email address, subject and message. We store them in our database and send ourselves an email with your message, so we see it quickly. To stop spam, Cloudflare Turnstile checks that the form is filled in by a person; for this Cloudflare receives your IP address and data about your browser. We only use your data to answer your message. Basis: legitimate interest.
We don’t use your data for advertising, and we don’t make automated decisions about you with legal effects. The app does automatically hide a photo or review that gets many thumbs down, and a pitstop that three people on the spot report as gone. That concerns the content, not you.
4. What others can see
- Your username, profile photo, level and character.
- Your contributions: photos, reviews and pitstops you added.
- Videos you add to a route can be seen by everyone, but without your name.
- A route of your own that you make public can be seen by everyone, with its line (by default without the first and last 200 metres), its name and your texts. A route you share with a link is only seen by people who opened the link. Nobody but you sees a private route.
- On the leaderboard: your username, profile photo and points, with your home town. If you don’t want this, turn off “Visible on the leaderboard” in Settings. You then also don’t take part in the monthly trophies.
- Lists are private unless you share them. Members of a shared list can see each other’s username, profile photo, level and XP, and the notes in that list.
- In a team, members see your username, profile photo, level, XP, role, since when you are a member, the XP you earned for the team, your chat messages and your activity in the team (your visits only if you share them). The team leaderboard shows the team’s name, without the names of members.
Not visible to others: your email address, first name, gender, date of birth, where and when you checked in (except for your team if you share your visits), and the location from your photos.
5. Who we share data with
We work with the companies below. They only receive what they need for their task and may not use your data for anything else, unless stated below.
- Supabase: database, photo storage and sign-in. All data above. Data centre in Frankfurt (EU); Supabase is a US company.
- Mapbox: map in the app, routes and searching by street and address. The part of the map you view, your IP address, the points of a route and what you type in the search bar. The Mapbox map also sends anonymous usage data with location to Mapbox; you can turn this off via the (i) on the map. United States.
- Expo: sending push notifications. Push token and the text of the notification. United States.
- Apple: Sign in with Apple and push notifications on iPhone. What is needed to sign in and deliver notifications; see Apple’s privacy policy.
- Google: Sign in with Google and push notifications on Android. What is needed to sign in and deliver notifications; see Google’s privacy policy.
- Google (Firebase Analytics): app statistics, see above. The code on your phone, how you use the app, and country and city. May be processed in the United States.
- Vercel: website hosting. Your IP address and technical data of your visit. Vercel is a US company.
- OpenFreeMap: the map on the website. The part of the map you view and your IP address.
- Anthropic (Claude): checking reported chat messages, see section 3. Only the text of a reported message. Under Anthropic’s commercial terms, text sent through its API is not used to train its models. United States.
- Cloudflare (Turnstile): spam check on the contact form. Your IP address and data about your browser. Cloudflare is a US company.
- Resend: sends us an email with your message from the contact form. Your name, email address, subject and message. Sent from the EU; Resend is a US company.
- Google (Google Workspace): our mailbox. The email with your message from the contact form, and emails you send us yourself, arrive there. Google is a US company.
- YouTube (Google): videos at routes. Only when you tap play does the app load YouTube’s player via youtube-nocookie.com. YouTube then receives your IP address and data about your phone, and may use cookies and similar storage in the player. Our server uses the YouTube API Services to fetch a video’s title, channel and thumbnail. The Google Privacy Policy applies to that. Google is a US company.
- TikTok: videos at routes. Only when you tap play does the app load TikTok’s player. TikTok then receives your IP address and data about your phone, and may use cookies and similar storage in the player. TikTok’s privacy policy applies to that. TikTok may process data outside the EU.
- Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager: visitor statistics for the website, see section 13. Google is a US company; Google Analytics keeps data for 14 months.
When you sign in, Apple and Google are themselves responsible for what they do with your data, and YouTube and TikTok for what they do with your data in their player.
The audio stories are made with services from Anthropic (Claude) and Google (speech). For these they only receive Wikipedia texts about the landmark, never user data. Besides that, Anthropic only receives the text of reported chat messages (see above).
We don’t sell your data, show ads or share anything with advertisers or data brokers.
6. Data outside the EU
Your data is stored in Frankfurt. Mapbox, Expo, Google (Firebase Analytics and Google Workspace), Vercel, Anthropic, Cloudflare, Resend and (for maintenance and support) Supabase are US companies and may process data in the United States. This is only allowed under arrangements approved by the European Commission: the EU-US Data Privacy Framework or standard contractual clauses.
If you play a video, YouTube (Google, a US company) or TikTok receive your data directly (see section 5). TikTok may process it outside the EU, including in the United States and Singapore.
7. How long we keep data
- Your account and everything linked to it: as long as you have an account.
- App statistics: 13 months, then they are deleted automatically.
- Statistics at Firebase: 14 months, then Google deletes them automatically.
- Push token: until you sign out, delete your account, or your phone stops accepting notifications.
- Team chat messages: until you delete the message or delete your account. If you leave the team, your messages stay in the chat, with your username. If the captain or an admin removes a message, nobody in the team sees it any more, but we keep it for moderation. A reported message is kept for moderation, even if you delete it yourself. If the team is closed down, its messages go with it.
- Team XP: the XP you earned for a team stays with the team, also when you leave or delete your account. Then only the number remains, without your name.
- Videos at routes: until you remove the video yourself, or until it is hidden or removed. If you delete your account, a video you added stays, without a link to you.
- Routes of your own: until you delete the route. If you delete your account, your routes go too, except a route someone else already walked: that one stays, without a link to you.
- Inbox: one year, then a message is deleted automatically.
- Send to phone: which pitstops you sent to your phone is kept for one day.
- Contact messages via the website: as long as needed to help you, and at most 12 months. Earlier on request.
- Backups: our database makes a daily backup. Deleted data remains there for up to 7 days, then it is gone.
8. Deleting your account
In the app: Profile › Settings › Delete account. We then immediately delete your account, profile, profile photo, photos, reviews, lists, check-ins and visits, points, notification choices, push tokens, feedback, your team membership, your chat messages (reported ones too), your activity in the team and your inbox. If you signed in with Apple, we also revoke the link with your Apple ID.
What remains: pitstops you added or improved stay on the map, without your name. The same goes for notes in a list you shared with someone, for videos you added to a route, and for the XP you earned for a team.
Can’t do it in the app, or no longer have the app? Ask via the contact form. We will then delete your account within one month. All steps are on Delete your account.
9. Your rights
You have the right to:
- access your data;
- have incorrect data corrected (much of it you can do yourself, in Edit profile);
- have your data deleted (see above);
- object to use based on legitimate interest;
- restrict the use;
- receive your data in a common format to take with you (portability);
- withdraw your consent, for example by turning off notifications or clearing your gender.
Send your request via the contact form. We respond within one month. We may ask you to confirm that the account is yours, for example via the email address you sign in with.
Not happy with how we handle your data? You can file a complaint with the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens) or the authority in your own country. We’d like to hear from you first, so we can try to solve it together.
10. Children
Outdoor Pitstop is meant for people aged 16 and over. If you are younger, use the app together with a parent or guardian, who creates the account. If we find that someone under 16 has an account without permission, we delete it.
11. Access on your phone
The app only asks for access when you do something that needs it. You can always turn it off again in your phone’s settings.
- Location (only while using the app): nearby pitstops, on-the-spot check and navigation. When you navigate a walking route, also with the screen off, until you stop.
- Motion & Fitness (steps): counting your steps while you navigate a walking route. Without this access everything works, just without steps.
- Camera: taking a photo of a pitstop or your profile photo.
- Photos: picking a photo from your camera roll, and saving photos you take in the app to your camera roll.
- Notifications: push notifications, see above.
“Add to calendar” opens your own calendar’s window. The app does not read your calendar.
Cookies in the app. The app itself sets no cookies. Only in the video player may YouTube and TikTok use cookies and similar storage, and only after you tap play. Preview images of videos come from our own storage, so viewing a route page sends nothing to YouTube or TikTok.
12. Security
All connections between the app, the website and our servers are encrypted (HTTPS). Your sign-in session is stored encrypted on your phone. In the database, each table defines who may read and change what; the location from your photos and your visits cannot be requested by other people’s apps.
13. Cookies on the website
We use Google Analytics, through Google Tag Manager, to see which pages are visited, which map filters are used, which buttons are tapped (such as to the App Store, Send to phone or Route) and how visitors find us. On your first visit we ask whether that may use cookies. If you say yes, Google Analytics sets cookies (such as _ga) to recognise return visits, for up to 2 years. If you say no, the website only sends anonymous counts without cookies. We use nothing for advertising and share nothing with advertisers. Your choice is kept in your browser; change it via “Cookies” at the bottom of every page. Basis: consent (cookies); legitimate interest (anonymous counts).
If you sign in, your browser keeps your sign-in in local storage (not a cookie); that is needed to stay signed in and is removed when you sign out. The map on the website is loaded from OpenFreeMap, which receives your IP address. The contact page loads the spam check of Cloudflare Turnstile, which receives your IP address and data about your browser.
14. Changes
If we change anything important in this policy, we will let you know in the app. The date of the last change is always at the top.
15. Contact
Questions about your privacy, or a request? Use the contact form.
