You're standing at Trajan's Column. It has stood on this exact spot for more than nineteen centuries. Look up along the shaft. A band of carved reliefs spirals around it from bottom to top, like a comic strip in stone. It tells the story of Emperor Trajan's two wars against the Dacians, in what is now Romania, at the start of the second century. The column was dedicated in the year 113.
