You're standing on Piazza del Campidoglio, at the top of the Capitoline Hill, one of the seven hills of Rome. This square got its shape in the sixteenth century, from a design by Michelangelo. Have a look around. Two palaces face each other and look almost like mirror images: the Palazzo dei Conservatori and the Palazzo Nuovo. Together they form the Capitoline Museums. The third palace, the Palazzo Senatorio, stands on the remains of the ancient Roman archive. The city government has met on this spot since 1144.
