You're standing at Ponte Sant'Angelo, the Bridge of Angels, with the round Castel Sant'Angelo right ahead. Emperor Hadrian had this bridge built in the year 134, as the way across to his new mausoleum, the castle you see now. That's why it was first called Pons Aelius, after Hadrian's family name. The middle section of the bridge still dates from Roman times.
