You're standing at the museum of the Ara Pacis, the Altar of Peace. What you see from outside isn't Roman at all, but a crisp building of glass, steel and travertine. American architect Richard Meier designed it, and it opened on 21 April 2006. It's one of the few modern buildings in the centre of Rome, and not everyone was pleased. Romans and foreign observers alike felt it clashed with the old city around it.
