You're standing at the Spanish Steps in Rome. In front of you, 135 travertine steps climb from Piazza di Spagna up to the Trinità dei Monti church at the top. Notice how the stairway curves in and out, with two wide terraces along the way. That's how architect Francesco de Sanctis turned an awkward, steep slope into one of the best-known spots in the city.
