You're standing at the Holy Stairs, the Scala Santa, across from the Basilica of Saint John Lateran in Rome. From outside you see a stately building. It dates from 1589, when Pope Sixtus V had the ruined Lateran Palace torn down and rebuilt, and the stairs were moved to this spot.
