You're standing at Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, the Basilica of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem. It's one of the Seven Pilgrim Churches of Rome. A strange name for a church in Rome, but there's a good story behind it. Empress Helena, mother of the emperor Constantine, lived here in a palace. According to tradition, she found the cross of Christ in Jerusalem. A church for the relics was made inside her palace, and soil from Jerusalem was said to be spread across its floor. So in a sense, this church really stood on a little piece of Jerusalem.
