You're standing at the Vittoriano, the monument to Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of a united Italy. It's hard to miss. This white giant against the Capitoline Hill is seventy metres tall and more than a hundred and thirty metres wide. Romans haven't always been kind about it. They call it the wedding cake, or the typewriter.
