You're standing in the Roman Forum, at the foot of the Capitoline Hill. In front of you are eight tall columns, still carrying a piece of the front of the building. Tradition says it was dedicated in 497 BC, in the early years of the Roman Republic, although ancient writers disagreed a lot about its history.
