You're standing at Trajan's Market, built into the slope of the Quirinal Hill. Look at that great half-circle of brick. It follows the exact curve of Trajan's Forum in front of it. The complex went up roughly between the years 100 and 112, in five levels against the hill, probably designed by Apollodorus of Damascus, Emperor Trajan's architect.
