You're standing at Canterbury Cathedral, the church of the Archbishop of Canterbury, spiritual leader of the Church of England. Look up at the great central tower. It's 72 metres high and goes by the name Bell Harry Tower. The gateway into the precincts is Christ Church Gate. During the English Civil War, Puritans smashed the statue of Christ above it. A new one only went up in 1990.
