You're standing on Dam Square in Amsterdam, between the Damrak and the Nieuwendijk. Take a look at the ground. Among the ordinary paving stones lie thirty-two larger ones, each roughly sixty by forty centimetres. Every stone carries a name. Together they form the memorial to the victims of the shooting on Dam Square on the seventh of May 1945, two days after liberation.
