You're standing at the Schreierstoren, on the corner of the Prins Hendrikkade and the Geldersekade. This sturdy little tower is the only defensive tower Amsterdam has left. It was built around 1487 as part of the city wall. The wall ran along the waterfront here and turned sharply at the tower. Take a look at the quay wall along the Geldersekade. The big sandstone blocks in it are remains of that old wall.
