You're standing at the Wereldmuseum Amsterdam, the museum of world cultures, on the Linnaeusstraat in Amsterdam East. Many locals still know it as the Tropenmuseum, its name from 1950 to 2023. Take a moment for the building. It was designed by the Van Nieukerken architects from The Hague and was lavishly decorated for its time. All the artwork on it dates from the first half of the twentieth century. Construction took eleven years, slowed down by the First World War and labour strikes. It opened in 1926, and since 2003 it has been a protected historic building.
