You're standing by NEMO Science Museum, on the Oosterdok, close to Amsterdam Central Station. Look at the big green building rising out of the water like the bow of a ship. It was designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano and opened in 1997. The shape is no accident. Right beneath you runs the IJ tunnel, and the museum actually sits on its foundations. The building mirrors the tunnel entrance, flipped upside down. The piles under it are ninety-five metres long.
