You're standing at the Nieuwe Kerk, the New Church, on Dam Square, right next to the Royal Palace. It's not that new. Construction began around 1380, on land given by Willem Eggert, who also paid for the building. The city's old church had become too small, and this second church was consecrated in 1409.
