You're standing on the Teufelsberg, the Devil's Hill, in the north of Berlin's Grunewald Forest. Take a look around at the trees and the paths. It feels like an ordinary wooded hill, but under your feet lies a ruined city. This hill is entirely man-made, built from Berlin's rubble after the Second World War. For twenty years, trucks came and went, around six hundred of them a day. When dumping stopped in 1972, roughly twenty-six million cubic metres of debris had piled up here. Then the city planted it with greenery. At just over 120 metres above sea level, this rubble mountain is now higher than the natural hills around Berlin.
