You're standing outside the Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin's Kreuzberg district. Most Berliners just call it the Gropius Bau. Take a look at that façade. This richly decorated block looks like it was shipped straight from Italy, and that was the whole idea. Architects Martin Gropius and Heino Schmieden built it between 1877 and 1881 in the neo-Renaissance style. Does the name Gropius ring a bell? Martin was the great-uncle of Walter Gropius, the famous founder of the Bauhaus.
