You're standing at the Victory Column, the Siegessäule, in the middle of the Tiergarten park in Berlin. It rises from the Großer Stern, a huge roundabout where five wide roads meet. Look all the way up. At the top, about sixty-seven metres above you, a gilded winged goddess catches the light. That's Victoria, the Roman goddess of victory. Berliners affectionately call her Goldelse, Golden Lizzy, after the heroine of a popular novel from 1866.
