You're standing at the Bundeskanzleramt, the Federal Chancellery, where Germany's chancellor and the Chancellery staff work. It sits on the Spreebogen, the bend in the River Spree in Berlin. Look at the shape: a huge block with enormous round openings. Not everyone liked it, and journalists, tour guides and Berliners came up with nicknames. One is the Kohllosseum, a mix of the Colosseum and Helmut Kohl, the chancellor under whom it was built. Another is the Bundeswaschmaschine, the federal washing machine, because of those round windows and its cube shape. And the least flattering one: Elefantenklo, the elephant loo.
