You're standing at the Oberbaum Bridge, which crosses the River Spree between Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain. Start with the two towers in the middle. They're thirty-four metres tall and look like a medieval city gate. Don't be fooled, though: they're purely for show. Architect Otto Stahn designed the bridge in North German Brick Gothic, with pointed arches and coats of arms. The towers were inspired by a gate tower in the small town of Prenzlau. They're a reminder that this was once Berlin's river gateway.
