You're standing at the Märkisches Museum, the city museum of Berlin. Take a good look at that red brick building. It looks like a little piece of a medieval town, with gables, rooftops and a sturdy tower fifty-three metres high. Yet it was only finished in 1908. Architect Ludwig Hoffmann designed it as a group of six different buildings around two courtyards. Each part nods to a different period of Brandenburg brick architecture, from Gothic to Renaissance. A kind of historical collage.
