You're standing on the south side of the Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin, in front of the Deutscher Dom. Now look across the square. See that almost identical domed tower over there, at the French Church? That's no coincidence. In 1780 Carl von Gontard designed two domed towers, one for each church. He borrowed the shape from a church in Paris that was still being built at the time, today's Panthéon. The idea was to make this square look like the Piazza del Popolo in Rome. Fun detail: the tower on this church collapsed while it was still going up. Georg Christian Unger was brought in to finish the job.
