You're standing at the Alte Nationalgalerie, in the middle of Museum Island in Berlin. First, look at its shape. The building looks like a Roman temple, with a rounded section at the back, an apse, like a church. The grand staircase out front is a bit like a theatre. The idea was to express the unity of art, nation and history. At the top of the stairs stands an equestrian statue of King Frederick William IV of Prussia. He drew a sketch for the building himself, and architect Friedrich August Stüler worked it out. The outside still looks just as it did at the opening in 1876.
