You're standing at the monument to Anton de Kom in Amsterdam-Zuidoost. The bronze statue stands at the top of a wide staircase, between the raised Bijlmerdreef and the lower Anton de Komplein square. Look at the base first. It tells you who he was: freedom fighter, resistance hero, writer, trade unionist, activist and exile. And there's a line from one of his own poems, roughly: I go to fight, and only after victory will I return.
