You're standing on Dam Square, the historic heart of Amsterdam. Around 1270, a dam was built across the river Amstel right here, and that's where Amsterdam gets its name. The dam linked the settlements on either side of the river. It had a sluice, and to the north lay the harbour, today's Damrak. Until 1841, ships still moored here to load and unload.
