You're standing on the Spui, in the old centre, between the Rokin and the Singel. Today it's an almost car-free square, but water used to flow here. Until the fifteenth century, the Spui marked the southern edge of Amsterdam. A spui is a sluice for letting water out. The water was filled in bit by bit, the last stretch in 1882.
