You're standing on Piazza Navona, in front of the church of Sant'Agnese in Agone. First, take a look at the square itself: long, narrow and rounded at one end. That's no accident. This was the stadium of Emperor Domitian, where the Romans held athletic contests. The Greek word for contest, agon, slowly wore down in everyday speech until it became Navona. In the church's name you can still hear the original word.
