You're standing on Via delle Botteghe Oscure, right in the middle of Rome. In ancient times this was the Campus Martius, the great open plain of the old city. And somewhere on this spot stood a temple to the Nymphs, the female nature spirits of springs and water. The remains here on this street are generally identified with that temple. So take a good look around. Between the traffic and the buildings, you're looking at a piece of very old Rome.
