You're standing at the Oudemanhuispoort, right in the heart of old Amsterdam. A covered passage runs through this building, from the Oudezijds Achterburgwal to the Kloveniersburgwal. The gate on the east side gave the whole complex its name. Take a look up at those gateways. They date from 1786, designed in classical style by city architect Abraham van der Hart, with sculptures by city sculptor Anthonie Ziesenis. A local carpenter had drawn six designs before that, and every one was rejected.
