You're standing at the Zuidertoren, the tower of the Zuiderkerk, the South Church, right in the old heart of Amsterdam. Take a look up. The tower is sixty-eight metres tall and was finished in 1614, a few years after the church itself. The church went up between 1603 and 1611 in Renaissance style, designed by Hendrick de Keyser. Here's a fun detail: it was built for Protestant worship, yet it was still named after a saint, Saint John. That's why it's also called the Janskerk.
