Story · Chiesa Nuova

You're standing at the Chiesa Nuova, the ‘new church’, just around the corner from Piazza Navona. Its official name is Santa Maria in Vallicella, Our Lady in the Little Valley. That name recalls a small stream that once ran through a dip in the land here. Tradition says Pope Gregory the Great built the very first church on this spot.
