You're standing in the Roman Forum, on the side of the Temple of Saturn. Somewhere right here, just below that temple, stood the Golden Milestone, the Milliarium Aureum. Emperor Augustus put it up in 20 BC. He was in charge of the roads at the time, and this marker was meant to show where every Roman road began.
