You're standing at Santo Stefano Rotondo, one of the oldest churches in Rome, up here on the Caelian Hill. Take a good look at its shape. From outside it's laid out like a cross, but inside the church is perfectly round. That was something new: it was the first church in Rome built on a circular plan. Its builders may have taken their cue from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.
