You're standing on Stephansplatz in Vienna, in front of St. Stephen's Cathedral, the Stephansdom. Start by looking up at the south tower. It's 136 metres tall, and the Viennese affectionately call it the Steffl, little Stephen. It took sixty-five years to build, finished in 1433. During the sieges of Vienna in 1529 and 1683, it served as the defenders' lookout post. Until 1955, watchmen even spent the night up there. If they spotted a fire anywhere in the city, they rang the bells.
