You're standing on Schwarzenbergplatz in Vienna, in front of the Soviet War Memorial. Its formal name is the Heroes' Monument of the Red Army. Look at the centre first. There's a soldier there, twelve metres tall. He wears a golden helmet, holds a Soviet flag and carries a golden emblem of the Soviet Union. A submachine gun hangs across his chest. Around him curves a semi-circle of white marble columns, together with a triumphal arch.
