You're standing by the remains of the Temple of Bellona, the Roman goddess of war. First, look at the big theatre across from you: the Theatre of Marcellus. When it went up under Emperor Augustus, buildings nearby had to be moved or even torn down. The temple was probably rebuilt around then, facing a different direction than before.
