You're standing on the Henric van Veldekeplein, right in the centre of Maastricht. Look around: you're between two great medieval churches. To the north is the massive Romanesque west front of the Basilica of Saint Servatius, with its early Gothic Bergportaal. To the east rises the red tower of Saint John's Church, seventy-nine metres tall. It only got that red colour in the early nineteen-eighties, during a restoration. The narrow lane between the two churches has a lovely name: Het Vagevuur, Purgatory.
