You're standing at the Roman villa of Herkenberg, on the east side of Meerssen. What you see is mostly a triangle of land between the Houthemerweg road, the Herkenberg hill and the footpath along the railway. But under your feet lies what may well have been the largest Roman villa in the Netherlands. The estate covered at least eight hectares.
