You're standing at Haeren Castle in Voerendaal, one of five castles in this municipality. Look at the east wing, with the carriage gate. That's where people live. Above the gate is a pediment, partly made of marlstone, with the Van Panhuys family coat of arms. In the right half of the wing you'll see stone cross windows, and iron wall anchors that together spell out a year: 1743. At the corners stand tower-like pavilions with mansard roofs. The moat in front is dry now and partly overgrown.
