You're standing at Schaloen Castle in Oud-Valkenburg, in the green valley of the river Geul. Coming up the drive, you pass a watermill first, then go through a gatehouse onto a square with the castle and its outer bailey. A moat surrounds the house. Its water comes from the Molenbeek, a branch of the Geul that was the river's main stream back in the sixteenth century.
