You're standing at Fort Ruigenhoek, just west of the village of Groenekan. Look around: ramparts, water and lots of green. Yet this was once part of a war machine. The fort belongs to the New Dutch Waterline and was built around 1869 and 1870. Artillery had become so much more powerful that the older forts sat too close to Utrecht. So a new ring was built further out, and this fort was part of it.
