You're standing at the Jewish monument of Utrecht, on the Johan van Oldenbarneveltlaan, right in front of the old Maliebaan station. The location was chosen for a reason. From 18 August 1942, most of Utrecht's Jews were deported from this station, which was otherwise out of use by then. First to Westerbork transit camp, then on to the extermination camps. More than sixteen hundred people were deported in 1942 and 1943. Only four hundred came back.
