You're standing on the Palatine Hill, among the remains of the Domus Flavia. This is where Emperor Domitian received his guests. The palace was finished around AD 92, built on an artificial terrace, probably to a design by his architect Rabirius. What you see around you was the official, public wing of a huge complex. The private quarters, the Domus Augustana, sit right next door.
