You're standing on Piazza del Popolo in Rome, and rising from the middle of the square is the Flaminio Obelisk. Take a moment to look up. The stone needle itself is almost twenty-four metres tall, and with its base and the cross on top it reaches more than thirty-six metres. All of it is a single block of red granite. The name comes from the Via Flaminia, the old Roman road that began right here.
