You're standing on Thorbeckeplein in Amsterdam, next to the bronze statue of Johan Rudolph Thorbecke. Take a look at his pose. He's wearing a smart suit and a long coat. His right hand rests on a Greek column, a symbol of democracy, and in his left he holds a scroll of law. That suits him. Thorbecke chaired the committee behind the 1848 revision of the Dutch constitution, and he served three times as Minister of the Interior.
