You're standing at Sant'Andrea delle Fratte, a seventeenth-century basilica dedicated to the apostle Andrew. The name means something like Saint Andrew of the Thickets. Odd, right in the middle of the city? When the first church went up here in 1192, this spot was on the northern edge of medieval Rome, out among the orchards. Later the area grew wild with brambles and hedges, and that's how the church got its name.
